End of Year Message from Superintendent Elect, Allana Prosser

District News

Dear Florence School District Five Family,

I have enjoyed the past few weeks here in Johnsonville filling in for Mr. Smiley and am very excited to officially begin my role as Superintendent on July 1. The “Flashes” license plate is on my car, and the “Flashes” gear has been ordered. I am definitely ready to lead this wonderful school district!

We are quickly approaching the end of the 20-21 school year, and it is an understatement to say that this year has been a challenging one! I am excited that our faculty and students will get a few weeks of rest and enjoyment over the summer so that we can come back strong and ready to work for the 21-22 school year! We are already planning for next year and want to give you some valuable information and important dates.

We will begin Online Registration on July 5. The directions, link, and guidance you need for online registration will be posted on all schools’ and district website as well as on our Facebook page by July 5. You will be able to register online throughout the month of July. If you have problems completing registration online and need assistance, schools will have staff available for in-person registration to assist you on July 27 from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.

I am planning a “Meet and Greet” drop-in late in July as an opportunity for any community members who may not know me (and those who do) to drop in and introduce themselves. We will send that date out through Facebook and our phone messenger in plenty of time for you to plan to drop in. I look forward to talking to our parents and stakeholders as we plan for the new year.

As part of our planning, we sent out a survey several weeks ago to get a feel for how many families might be interested in virtual learning, and the results indicated that less than five percent of our parents expressed an interest. Because of this low interest and the dire need to get our students back in school, Florence School District Five will be offering total in-person learning experiences for all students in the fall. There will not be a virtual option. Because our teachers will no longer have to teach virtual students and face-to-face students at the same time, all instruction will be delivered daily by the teacher in a live, hands-on mode of learning as we did prior to COVID. Our students will continue to have access to one-to-one technology and will be prepared for virtual learning should an emergency arrive, but we are excited to get back to only face-to-face delivery of instruction. Please contact us if you have any medical or other concerns with face-to-face learning so that we can assist you.

Students will return to school on August 16, 2021. More information will be sent prior to that date to prepare you for the upcoming school year. We have a lot of catching up to do when we return, and we really need your help. I believe that we can close the learning GAP created by COVID, but it will take us ALL! As parents, you can help us tremendously this summer by implementing two rules in your home.

1) Require your child to read every day! (don’t give in---- reading is the only way to become a stronger reader, and reading is needed in every subject.) The more they read literature that they enjoy, the more they will love to read!
2) Expect their very best and hold them accountable! I cannot stress this enough. Our students need to try hard and learn to work hard and understand that they have to earn it. We have to teach them to succeed and give their best. This summer, make them clean their room and help out around the house and expect nothing but their best! Make them finish what they start, and encourage them to push themselves in anything they try to do.

When we return next year, I will have high expectations for the faculty and staff of Florence School District Five, and we all will have high expectations for the students. We will not have time for a lack of effort. We are going to rally around each other and push each other for excellence! Hard work and dedication will also bring fun and celebration. Together, we will have an amazing year, and I am so excited to be a part of it!

Thank you for your dedication and support. It takes a village, and I don’t know of any village more dedicated to our children! Have a safe and restful summer, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

With warmest regards,

Allana Prosser
